Types of Logos
Word Mark Logo
These are uniquely styled text logos that spell out the company or brand name, they consist of text only. Many times, custom fonts are created specifically for brands to use across all their marketing and branding collateral. Some examples include Facebook, Google, Coca-Cola, Disney and Sony.
An emblem is the type of logo that includes text inside of a symbol. It’s a classic look that gives your logo a traditional quality. That’s why you’ll often see them used by schools and government agencies — they make everything feel nice and official.
Letter Mark Logo
Think abbreviations. Letter marks are exclusively typographic. They use a symbol representing the company through the use of its initials or the brands first letter. Many companies choose to use this type of logo because their initials can better graphically illustrate the company better than the full name (name is too long), the name is hard to pronounce, or it’s just not distinct enough to carry its own weight. CNN is an example of a monogram letter mark logo — it uses the initial letters of the company’s full name, Cable News Network, to create the logo. FedEx represents an anagram letter mark logo, drawing on the first few letters of each word of the corporate name — Federal Express.
Combination Mark Logo
These logos combine a wordmark and a symbol or icon to give the flexibility for the use of either or both elements across a variety of applications. It’s the most common type of logo design, in part due to its flexibility. You can use the symbol on its own (e.g. in social media profile photos or favicons), or just the wordmark or lettermark when you need it. You might recognize some combo marks like Apple, Adidas and Lacoste.
